With today being the year's last weekend day-time negative tide, I (and about a thousand others) had a rare chance to see and walk the massive reef next to the Mavericks' surf spot in Half Moon Bay between the hours of 3-6 PM. Walking the reef, with a pair of good boots (recommended), I saw sea critters that were not easily/commonly seen in bright daylight since they were usually submerged in as much as 5 feet of sea water. According to people-in-the-know, the tide today dipped to as low as -1.61 feet at around 5:19 PM (the reef was walkable at about 0 feet). I saw crabs, sea stars, clams, mussels, anemones, and many types of sea weeds. Many people came prepared to dig for clams/mussels as well - no permit was required for any bucket/net/bag of clams/mussels that weighed 10-lbs or less. I was also captivated by the powerful waves. The energy they exuded was contagious and I felt invigorated just being near them. I wondered what it would feel like to be a surfer in the Mavericks. The weather was sunny and relatively warm and we were treated to a magnificent sunset. Again, I reiterate, the BEST things in life are free!!!
