Aachen Weihnachtsmärkt (Christmas Market), Germany - 28 November 2006

One of my classmates organized a Christmas shopping bus trip to Aachen for a token sum of 5. I had a delightful time browsing the stalls and sampling the local fare. The festive spirit at Aachen's Christmas market was utterly enchanting - twinkling lights, handcrafted ornaments, holiday trinkets, mulled wine, sizzling wieners, and sugary seasonal treats filled the air with warmth and cheer. It was a perfect way to usher in the holiday season!

German Christmas markets, or Weihnachtsmärkte, trace their origins back to the Late Middle Ages. The Dresden Striezelmarkt, first held in 1434, is considered one of the oldest. Originally winter markets where townsfolk stocked up on goods before the cold months, they gradually evolved into cherished Advent traditions. Today, these markets are celebrated for preserving regional crafts, culinary delights, and a sense of community, making them a beloved part of Germany’s cultural heritage.
