Athens, Greece: 22-23 December 2006; 30 December 2006 - 03 January 2007

I spent my winter break in Mediterranean Greece hoping to escape the northern chill, but it was in vain. Still, during my 11-day Greek odyssey, I was immersed in a vivid mosaic of Greek culture, history, and landscapes that I must say, were truly astounding.

Flying into Athens from Amsterdam, I took the train into the city and reunited with my travel companion, Rodney. From there, we rented a car and drove northwest into the rugged hinterland to explore ancient Delphi and the majestic cliff monasteries of Meteora. On our way back, we paused at Thermopile for a quick dip in its hot springs, and then detoured through Corinth to glimpse the legendary man-made canal. We later caught a southeast-bound flight and cooled our heels on the beautiful and romantic isle of Santorini.

The food was decent overall, and I found many locals (especially in the cities) to be characteristically brash and proud. On the whole, I found Greece compelling - its history, culture, and landscapes made a lasting impression.

Here are photos of my trip (some are courtesy of Rodney, who's got quite the eye behind the lens):
