One Saturday, our school organized a day trip for our cohort to Zeeland, the southwesternmost province of the Netherlands. We visited Neeltje Jans, a water-themed park built on an artificial island at the heart of the Delta Works. The entrance fee was €9.
There, we learned about the Delta Works - an extraordinary system of dams, storm surge barriers, and sluices designed to protect the low-lying Dutch coast from the sea. Built in response to the devastating North Sea Flood of 1953, the Delta Works is often called the eighth wonder of the world.
After our visit, we continued on to Antwerp, just across the border in Belgium, before returning to Maastricht later that evening.
